In 1980, David Graham composed a beautiful devotional song entitled, “In Moments Like These.”
In moments like these I sing out a song
I sing out a love song to Jesus
In moments like these I lift up my voice
I lift up my voice to the Lord
Singing, “I love you Lord!”
Singing, “I love you Lord!”
Singing, “I love you, Lord! I love you!”
One thing I love about this lyric is the openness of the “moments like these.” Singing is one of the most natural expressions our spirit engages in. Even those who can’t carry a tune in a bucket find themselves, at times, with a song in their heart and a melody on their lips. What Graham captures in his song is that our hearts can be led to sing out to the Lord in any number of situations or reasons.
We sing in those moments when our hearts are filled with joy and happiness. James 5:13 says, “Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise.”
We sing in those moments we want to ingrain the message of Jesus in each other. “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” (Colossians 3:16)
We sing in those moments in which we are being filled with his Spirit. Ephesians 5:18-19 encourages us to “be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart.”
We sing in those moments when our hearts are troubled. Psalms 13:6 is the end of a lament song, where the Psalmist is deeply troubled by life’s circumstances. Having poured out his heart, he concludes, “I will sing to the Lord, because he has dealt bountifully with me.”
As you finish reading, I challenge you to stop and ponder, “What song am I singing to Jesus in this moment.” It may require conscientious effort to do so, or the song may flow freely from your heart. Either way is fine. As you continue through the day, your life will be filled with countless more moments. Hopefully there will be more good ones than bad ones. Whichever you encounter, though, don’t forget that in moments like these you can sing out your love for Jesus.
