Concussions

(From Odie: Speaking from experience, concussions are no joke. I have experienced way too many and this probably accounts for the daily headaches. As parents, Kim and I have dealt with concussions with 2 of our 3 boys and have to pay close attention to their headaches and blows to the head.)
Over the last several years, this has been an almost constant discussion in sports, particularly in football. The more we learn about the brain, the more concerning we realize concussions are. If a person breaks an arm, pulls a muscle, or tears a ligament, it can be bad, but it is nowhere near as serious as injuring the brain. After all, a single injury to the brain can paralyze, cripple, or lay waste to the entire body! Brain injuries are enormously serious.
God knew what He was doing when He compared the church to a "body" (Romans 12:4f; 1 Corinthians 12:26f; Colossians 1:17f). New Testament Christians make up the different parts of this body. Sadly, sometimes the parts of this body become injured. They can become spiritually weak. They can become paralyzed and inactive. Worst of all, some parts of this body are even amputated.
However, unlike our physical bodies, the head is never injured. The head of this body is Jesus Christ (Colossians 1:18). Even though we worry about head injuries, we do not need to worry about the head of the church. We never have to worry about a crippling blow to our head. Not even Satan can take Him down. Christ is all-powerful, all-knowing, and will never be subjected to any weakness or injury. Christ will always reign as the church's head.
We as people have weaknesses, insecurities, and imperfections. What a tremendous blessing to be guided by a head who will never have a lapse in judgment or make a rash decision. What an incredible blessing to have a head who will never be weakened, dethroned, or detained. What a blessing to have a head who loves us and looks out for us. Let's give Christ the praise, glory, and, above all, obedience He deserves.
