Why Be 95%
I am a pretty big fan of comedy. Unfortunately, comedians today are incredibly crass. Apparently the world finds crude and foul language funny because of how common it is in comedy. I don't find it funny at all. Which is why one of my favorite comedians is Brian Regan. Besides being funny, I like him is because he is one of the cleanest comedians I've heard. Right now he is at the peak of his career and has become quite famous for his unique style and clean jokes about everyday life. Sometime ago CNN interviewed him:
CNN: "You don't really use the crass language many comedians rely on. Is there a reason for that?"
Regan: "I don't really know those words [laughing]...I was always 90 to 95 percent clean with my jokes anyways...why be 95 percent something when you could be 100 percent something? It worked out, and people really seem to respond to it so I guess that other 5 percent wasn't that important anyways".
While I cannot vouch for every word of Brian Regan's material, I will say he is perhaps the cleanest comedian I have ever heard. What I liked most about this interview was Brian's attitude when it came to bad language. He was going to stay true to who he is and what he does, even if this meant losing some fans (but really, who would stop being a fan because there were not enough bad words?). He found he did not need to be dirty to be successful. Which in reality may be the key to his success.
When we look at our own lives, are we only being 90-95% clean? Maybe less? Are we holding on to that one sin in our lives? Why be 95%? The Lord ask us to be 100% genuine Christians (Romans 8:6-8). There are many reasons why people are enticed by sin (addiction, peer pressure, acceptance, fun, etc.). However, if we really take a step back to see the whole picture, the reasons we fall into sin are not important. The only truly important decision is to follow Christ (John 21:18f). The Lord asks us to be 100& pure, clean, and genuine (Luke 9:23). This does not mean we will not sin, or do it perfectly, but we should always do our best (1 John 1:7; 2:1-6). We can give 100%. Similar to what Brian said, why be 95 percent Christian when you could be 100% Christian? Anything holding us back is not that important. Let us always strive to be 100%. --Borrowed
